The Parish Chest of St. Mary Magdalene of Debenham

This mediaeval Parish Chest, with its attractive ironwork, stored parish documents and valuables. It has the customary three locks, for which the Vicar and two Churchwardens each had keys and all three had to be present to open it..

Originally the Parish Records would have been kept in this Chest. Nowadays the PR's are held in a locked safe.

The Card Index was compiled from the Parish Registers by the Debenham Historical Society and is held in Dove Cottage, next door to the Church.
